The first stop is an off-road route to the 2002 eruption lava front, the flow that destroyed the Piano Provenzana ski facilities and part of the Ragabo Pine Forest. The van then follows the Mareneve road through the Ragabo Forest to the trailhead near Rifugio Citelli.

The Sartorius craters hike is about 3 km and easy, starting at 1,665 m and topping out around 1,775 m along a line of side craters called a bottoniera, with views toward Calabria and the Aeolian Islands. After the trek you put on the provided helmet and flashlight and enter the Grotta dei Ladroni, a lava tunnel partly excavated by hand, with 1776 carved into the stone above the entrance. Locals once stored snow inside it to sell in summer.
